The story of Pastis: The nowadays world famous aperitif Pastis was created in 1932 by Paul Ricard at the age of 23. Son of a wine wholesaler from Marseille the creation of Pastis (which means mixture in Provençal) will enable him to build a beverage empire. This aperitif is a very special mixture based on anis, liquorice and several aromatic plants. The people from Marseille accept very quickly this new beverage created in the land of the Mistral. Nowadays Pastis is of the favourite drinks in France and is associated with sun, relaxing, cicada and pétanque, which may explain why Pastis consumption is higher in the North.
